What this spread does

Six cards on one hard experience, from the same workshop as the Lock. It looks at the event from both ends: what it cost you and what grew out of it. In plain words, something bad happened, you got through it, and there is now something in you that was not there before. One line from the workshop is worth keeping: you are always bigger than the thing that happened to you.

It is a spread for an experience you can already look at, not for a wound from last month. Six cards, six questions, one event.

The six positions

  1. The source. The person or event behind the pain. A sudden departure (the Tower), a grief nobody let you finish (Five of Cups), a relationship where you were managed (the Devil).
  2. Lessons. What the experience taught you, the usable part. Justice: telling your share from someone else's. Two of Swords: refusing to decide blind.
  3. Gifts. What appeared because of it. The workshop's own example is the person who came out of “I am not good enough” with humor, charisma and an ear for other people's pain. Strength, the Star and Three of Cups look like that here.
  4. Healing: steps and resources. What concretely takes the experience out of the driver's seat: routine and time (Temperance), a mentor or a professional (the Hierophant), a conversation with someone who was there (Two of Cups).
  5. Where you are now, two sides. The original layout puts two cards here, a light one and a dark one. We draw one and read both sides of it: what in this card carries you forward, and what in it still stings and has to be felt through rather than jumped over.
  6. The door into the future. What changes once the experience is lived rather than carried. The World closes the circle; Three of Wands puts plans on the horizon. A hard card here means one more step still to walk, and the reading describes it.

How to read it

Start with cards two and three. Gains are easier to look at than causes, and they open the subject without a fight. Then go back to card one; the source reads more calmly once you have seen what it produced. Cards four and five are the practical pair: what to do and in what state you are doing it. Card six is a direction and comes without promises.

Hold one experience while you draw and keep it specific. “Moving countries at sixteen”. “The layoff last year”. “The divorce”. One event, six cards.

An example

Experience: a divorce three years ago. Cards: the Tower, Justice, Strength, Temperance, the Hanged Man, Three of Wands. The break was sudden and not yours to schedule (1); the lesson is separating your share from what was placed on you, and writing agreements down (2); the gift is a longer fuse, so that other people's displeasure no longer moves you off your position (3); recovery wants routine and time, not a sprint (4); you are in a pause right now and it should not be cut short (5); and the door ahead already has plans visible through it, a new city or a new field (6).

What usually goes wrong

People lay it on fresh pain. Wait until you can turn to the event without falling into it; until then the Lock is the spread that fits, because it works with what is shut right now.

A hard card in the sixth position gets read as “nothing will change”, when it means there is one more step and the step has a shape.

And the common one: understanding an experience and doing something about it get treated as the same act. They are weeks apart. Position four exists precisely for that gap. Card meanings are in the dictionary; the birth-chart view of the same theme is the karmic tail. This is entertainment and not psychological or medical help; if the state is heavy, take it to a professional.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to do this spread on my own?

For an experience you can already talk about, yes. For something raw, no. The test is simple: if thinking about the event makes the rest of the day impossible, this is a spread to do with support rather than alone at midnight.

What if the gifts card makes no sense to me?

That happens, and usually the gift is something you have stopped noticing because it feels ordinary now: patience, a thick skin, an eye for who is lying. Read the card's advice section and ask which of it you did not have before the event.

How is this different from the Lock spread?

The Lock works with what is shut away right now and how to open it. This one works with an experience you have already been through, and asks what it taught and what it left you. The Lock first, this one after.

Can a tarot spread heal a trauma?

No. It can put words to it and suggest where to start, which is worth something on a day when nothing has words. The healing part is done with time, people and, when it is heavy, a professional.
