What this spread does
This one is aimed at the decision you have been circling for a month. Stay or go. Ask for the raise now or after the quarter. Take the offer or stay freelance. The spread describes where you are standing, what is holding the situation still, and the one move that changes it.
It reads your side of the job. It will not name a company, a salary or a date, and it does not know what your manager decided on Tuesday.
The three positions
- Where you stand at work now. Your actual position and how it feels from the inside. People are often surprised here: the job they call fine turns up as Four of Cups, and the job they call awful turns up as solid work with one bad relationship in it.
- What is slowing you down. The brake. Sometimes it is the system, more often it is a habit of yours that the system rewards.
- Your next step. One concrete move inside the next few weeks. This is the position the whole spread exists for.
How to read it
Give the third card most of your attention and turn it into a task with a date on it. If it is a court card, the step involves a person: a conversation, a request, an introduction. If the second and third cards share a suit, the brake and the fix live in the same place and one move handles both.
Wands here mean pace and initiative, Pentacles mean the concrete job and its pay, Swords mean agreements and hard conversations, Cups mean whether you still want any of it. A spread with no Pentacles in it is usually not really about the job.
An example
Question: why has my career stalled for a year? Cards: Two of Wands, Seven of Cups, Ace of Swords. You have a plan and a map, and you have been holding both for a while without walking anywhere (1); what slows you is the number of options you keep open, all equally attractive on paper and none of them chosen (2); the step is to cut the list to one and say it out loud, in an application, a message or a conversation with your manager (3).
What usually goes wrong
Half of career spreads are actually about a person: a boss, a colleague, the friend who got promoted first. That is a fine question, it is just a different one, and the cards will answer the question you asked.
The other habit is waiting for a perfect step. The third card names one move, and it is usually smaller than the one you were hoping to be handed. And a spread is not a substitute for the boring part: the résumé, the numbers, the conversation.

How soon does the next step happen?
The third position is about the coming weeks rather than the coming year. If the card is a Wand, expect it to be quick; Pentacles usually take longer and hold better.
What if the second and third cards contradict each other?
That is normal and often the most useful part of the reading. It usually means the brake is one you benefit from, and the step asks you to give up that benefit. The AI reading names the trade-off directly.
